Urquiza Line: Argentina Restores a Rail Corridor to Mercosur – Todo Logística News | 14/08/26

Work is progressing in Entre Ríos and Corrientes on the restoration of the Urquiza Line, a strategic rail corridor connecting Argentina with Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The project involves work on 210 kilometers of track and the renovation of two bridges, with a contribution of US$29.8 million from the Mercosur Structural Convergence Fund (FOCEM) and an additional US$14.6 million from Belgrano Cargas y Logística. The work includes the access spur to the Agustín Pedro Justo–Getúlio Vargas International Bridge, which connects Paso de los Libres with Uruguaiana, Brazil, and aims to boost the exchange of cargo such as paper, plastics, chemicals, dairy products, beverages, and automotive industry products. The Urquiza Line, which uses a standard gauge of 1,435 millimeters, also provides connections to Paraguay via the Posadas–Encarnación crossing—with the potential to transport rice, lumber, soybeans, and corn—and to Uruguay via Concordia–Salto, for cargo such as soybeans, cellulose, and wheat. The restoration could help reduce road congestion and logistical bottlenecks, although other measures are still needed—including the rehabilitation of the Cacequi–Uruguaiana section and the construction of the Uruguaiana rail bypass—to fully leverage the corridor as rail, intermodal, and cross-border infrastructure.
