The global beef market is closely monitoring the pace of China’s imports, as a stronger-than-expected first half of 2026 could lead the country to reach its annual import quota earlier than anticipated, creating opportunities for exporters such as Argentina. Between January and June 2026, China imported 1.53 million metric tons of beef, up 17.5% year-on-year, against an annual quota of 2.69 million metric tons. While Australia has already exhausted its allocation and Brazil had used around 80% of its quota by the end of the first half, Argentina still has available capacity, having exported 239,500 metric tons, a 12% increase from the previous year, within its 511,000-metric-ton quota. According to Datamar data, Argentina also exported 16,240 TEUs of beef to China during the first half of the year. The report notes that if Brazil faces restrictions on additional shipments to China, Argentina could expand its share in the world’s largest beef import market. Strong demand and quota-constrained supply have already pushed international prices higher, with the average prices paid by China rising more than 30% year-on-year by the end of the first half, while Argentine FOB export prices increased by US$200–300 per metric ton in recent weeks. In parallel, Brazil and China are discussing the creation of bonded warehouses to store beef until new quotas become available, while Brazil and Uruguay are evaluating a possible quota exchange, negotiations that could reshape the future structure of the global beef trade.
